Big living history festival in Kolomenskoe Park this weekend! Extra convenient because it's right next to my flat and for once I don't have to camp in the pouring rain to get photos like this. The riders in the "polo" game are using boffers (padded swords) and a large bundle of fabric, which I imagine smells better than the dead animal the game is traditionally played with. One of the Viking boats, the one that doesn't have a mast or sail yet, was just made this summer by my husband's friend Radagast. Way to go!

4 Sep 2011Very nice! Elliott thought the reenactors did a very good job. Overall, he gives the reenactors high marks. We noticed a few anachronism, like the leg tape on the horse and the boffing swords but, we understand why that was done.

4 Sep 2011They are very, very picky about authenticity here. Tony is ashamed to be seen in public with me because I don't have nalbound socks yet (I've only finished one) and have to wear modern socks with my garb. With my ankle length linen-canvas dress, that is. Sigh…

4 Sep 2011It's only the horse combat where they use boffers, btw. All the fighting on foot is done with live steel, though it's dull, and many of the guys barely have armor, just a leather shirt, which is dumb but hardcore.

4 Sep 2011Elliott wondered why he didn't see more armor. We assumed that was because it is expensive. Usually reenactors buy or make the basic clothes and then save their money for the expensive equipment.
When to you think you'll finish the other stocking?

5 Sep 2011My mistake! There was more horse combat yesterday and I realized that the session with little armor and boffers was just a practice run. They had on full armor and live steel for the scheduled tournament. Unfortunately I didn't get many very good photos because the crowds were insane and I couldn't get close enough for good shooting.

12 Sep 2011Oh, that makes sense. I'm sure they'll be plenty of opportunities for more photos. 🙂
