The Torchlit Procession

Last year I was walking across Tallinn late at night, off to get a pint of the nice house porter at Hell Hunt, when a group in medieval garb and carrying torches stepped out of one of the old buildings. They walked down to one of the gates in the city walls – all of Old Town’s fortifications survive – playing pipe and tabor. It was intensely surreal and beautiful and a little scary. I treated this photo to look a bit like an early horror movie, because it seemed to suit it.

My Estonian friends that I was meeting at the pub, when I described it, thought it might be a student group induction rite of some sort. Whatever it was, it provided some of my favorite photos of Tallinn!
