Just curious, are you still in Samsun? My wife and I lived there from 1961 thru ’65 whe I worked for GD. I know the area has changed considerably but wonder if any of these places are still there?
The Prisons, mens and womens in town?
The US Air Force base?
The little Catholic Church?
The elli alta area?
Vidinli Hotel?
And your impressions of the place, mine were favorable.
Regards
Yes, just got here two months ago and will be here through at least June. Samsun’s probably changed a lot since you were here — we’re in the Atakum suburb and I hear it’s only about 5 years old. Samsun’s undergone some massive development in the last 20 years overall; sometimes when I’m busing through the city I think it looks like some giant shook up a handful of apartment buildings and dropped them all over the ground. Not exactly a testament to urban planning… unfortunately, I don’t know about any of the buildings/ organizations you mentioned — I’m mainly going to school and back, doing some shopping downtown, etc, but my Turkish isn’t very good and my social life has mainly been with the school’s other English teachers.
